Flyfishing and Light Tackle Pursuit of
Trophy Gamefish on Scenic Cape Cod Waters.....

Striped Bass (Monroe saxitalis)

Striped Bass inhabit our waters from mid May thru October. The fish that arrive here first are school fish in the three to five pound range with catches of twenty fish per four hour trip not uncommon. Larger Bass from ten to thirty pounds and up arrive in mid June and hang around until October. A seven-weight rod works well for the early school fish and a nine-weight rod will handle all but the largest fish. At times I may go to a ten or eleven weight rod when the fish are in the deeper waters offshore. Intermediate lines are preferred with a quality reel holding 200 of yards backing. Sight casting to Stripers on the flats of Nauset Marsh and Cape Cod Bay can produce trophy catches for the accomplished angler. Both the 20lb.class World Records on Spin Tackle of 73 pounds and the 20lb.Fly Rod of 35 pounds were caught at Nauset.World record opportunitys abound on 20pound class tippets.

Bluefish  (Pomatomus saltatrix)

Bluefish roam the entire East Coast from Florida to the Gulf of Maine. During the summer months they take up residence in the waters surrounding the Cape. Fish from 4 pound juveniles to tackle breaking 20 ponders are available. It is possible to encounter schools of Blues numbering in the thousands willing to take anything that you throw at them. Cape Cod Bay is the place to be for really large Blues.

False Albacore  (Euthynnus alletteratus)

False Albacore enter our waters in mid July and are most acessable in Nantucket Sound from Chatham to Martha’s Vineyard. They stick around until mid October. The Albys are not as large as their brothers found off the coast of the Carolinas but never less they offer drag-screaming runs. The average fish is in the 5-7 pound range, with an occasional fish in the teens. The waters surrounding Monomy Island and Nantucket Sound from Chatham to Martha’sVineyard hold the largest concentrations of Albys.

Atlantic Bonito  (Sarda Sarda)

Atlantic Bonito are one of the most sought after fish of the Tuna family on Cape Cod for the inshore fisherman. The Bonita will show up shortly before the Albys and as the water temperature rises they will leave for deeper water. As the water cools at the end of October they will return for a few weeks before heading South. Most of the Bonita caught here are in the 6-10 pound class.
